If all assets are held in joint names then you don’t need a Grant of Probate. The assets will transfer automatically into the name of the surviving owner.

What If assets are held in the deceased’s sole name?

Most banks and financial institution will release assets under £5,000 without a Grant of Probate. Some increase this limit so it is worth checking with them first.  
The transfer of property will require a Grant of Probate.
